Training your own Gun Dog.

 

I really like this "Speed Train your own bird dog" book.  Smart, clever, quick results!  This is a book to buy with a new puppy or an older dog you want to break.

Gun Dog has been the Gun Dog training bible for 50 years now.  It is still very good although with new devices and new techniques there are simpler ways to train your dog.  Delmar Smith has very common sense Gun Dog Training.  Very practical advice.

This is the VHS equivalent to the book.

This is a magazine that I subscribe to.  It is full of tips on training, care, general pup rearing and training tools and techniques. 

This is another excellent source of training information, breed history and desk reference.

New to the German Shorthair Pointer breed?

This is an excellent book by Trevor's (Ch. Tabor's Foxglove Endeavor CGC)  breeder Joan S. Tabor.  It covers temperament, AKC standard, finding a breeder, picking a puppy, tips on house training, picking a trainer - it is a must have for new GSP owners and to make things even more Awesome there are pictures of Trevor when he was a puppy used in the book!

German Shorthaired Pointers: Everything About Purchase, Care, Nutrition, Breeding Behavior, and Training (Complete Pet Owner's Manual) by Chris C. Pinney

Another General Care and Breed Standard book by Diane McCarty.

Breed History:

The New Complete GSP by Robert McKowen is one of my favorite books.  It talks about how the GSP breed came to the US and what dogs solidified the foundation of the great dogs of today.  It's really fun to look up my dog's history and see pictures of some of the great dogs in their pedigree.

General Puppy Care:

Jim Powell and Awesome's Hasta Be Shasta picture by Carol Fuller - Powell

This is a book that was given to me by a woman who bought a puppy from me.  It teaches a gentle positive way of raising a puppy to a happy healthy adult.  I really like this book because it teaches you to be firm with your puppy but it teaches you why and when it's needed.  It is very well written.
